National Health Atlas

The Maternal GIS Project is a collaborative effort between National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) and the Department of Health (DOH). As part of the Maternal care component of the Women's Health and Safe Motherhood Project, which the DOH is implementing, the Health department contracted the services of NAMRIA to develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) for maternal care and women's health.

The National Health Atlas component covered the development of a GIS-based system that would display the location of health facilities and provide attribute information. The locations of RHUs and hospitals were gathered using hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) units.

The development of a database containing information on health facilities required a massive data gathering undertaking. The survey of health facilities covered 2,410 RHUs and 690 hospitals in the whole country. Data gathering activities included the conduct of GPS survey, collection of survey forms and taking pictures of the health facility.
